20. Safety Information

There are a few different ways to get around Cartagena, depending on your budget and needs. Buses, bicycles and caps are available to move around, also most of touristic places can be explored on foot.

  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash, don’t carry cameras in plain sight and do not leave belongings unattended.
  • Heed the advice of your hosts, Cartagena Visitor Centre staff, or locals on where to go after dusk. Avoid walking in deserted and dark places at night. Park in a secure, well-lit area with street guards.
  • Never allow strangers to assist you in any way at ATMs or cash points.
  • Street children and beggars may approach you for a handout.
  • In the historic center of Cartagena, you may run across some street informal vendors trying to convince you to buy things, and some other actors of informal economy, including street rappers. Be careful and ask for help to any security if you feel harassed by them.
  • Barriers in communication are common due to the language gap. Write some words on paper in Spanish that could help you communicate with locals in case words fail you.
  • Keep copies of all valuable documents in a safe place.
  • When visiting the town, be prepared for the hot and humid weather. Bring along enough water and sunblock, as well as some cool clothing to wear. Start heading back well before dark and don’t venture away from the recommended places to visit.
  • Load the emergency numbers into your mobile phone before going on a walk in case of emergency: Cartagena Police Department (123) and Cartagena Health Department (125).

"I want to add on my congrats for a really terrific conference. The attendees were especially dialed in, the engagement at the sim sessions was really thoughtful, the faculty talks and presence from each of you were exceptionally articulate and compelling, and I had the sense that the workshop was going to translate into a real upshift in patient care and treatment patterns, among colleagues that face many challenges. "I am excited to share my sincere gratitude to all the organizers and presenters for the just ended South African Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop. The outcome was amazing . Thank you for your efforts to shape the upcoming future leaders in comprehensive cleft care. The knowledge we have acquired will go a long way in providing best practices in our care for children born with cleft lip and palate striving to reduce complications . The Nasal Elevator, Lip Taping and Speech Therapy Techniques we learned during the workshop will definitely help us make a difference while putting a smile on the face of that child and the mother raping it up with the psychosocial tips of family centered care and patient centered care approach."
