Alveolar Bone Grafting (ABG)
Lead Trainers:
Dr. Charanya Vijayakumar & Dr. Marcia Perez-Dosal
Overview:
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a complex congenital anomaly which in addition to the deformities in the lip and palate, extends across the maxillary alveolar arch. The defect in the maxilla extends from the pyriform margin to the lower free border alveolar arch and corresponds to the segment through which the future permanent canine erupts. Alveolar bone grafting (ABG) is necessary to stabilize the maxillary arch, to prevent the permanent canine from deviating into the cleft while erupting and providing a stable platform for the nose.
Alveolar bone grafting requires recreating the three dimensional periosteal envelope consisting of buccal, palatal and nasal surfaces to bridge cleft alveolar defects and pack it with cortico-cancellous bone or equivalent to enable osteo-conduction for restoring the missing bone.
Learning Outcomes:
This workshop is aimed at practising cleft surgeons and trainees to familiarise with the following:

- Time appropriate planning of interventions
- Decision making on pre vs no orthodontic intervention prior to bone grafting
- Overview of orthodontic preparation in different age groups.
- Familiarize with surgical techniques on simulation models
Content:
- Introductory remarks and the decision-making process – 10 minutes
- Orthodontic inputs – 20 minutes
- Step by step demonstration of the surgical techniques and hands-on
